FAQs

At Tappwater, we’re not just selling water filters; we’re giving you cleaner, safer water. Our Tap Water Filter uses 5-stage Advanced Nanofiltration technology to remove harmful substances like PFAS, microplastics, and chlorine. But there’s one thing it can’t do—remove all the fluoride. Here’s why.

How Activated Carbon Works: Imagine a Sponge for Chemicals

Activated carbon is the heart of our filtration system. Think of it like a sponge, but instead of soaking up water, it soaks up contaminants. As water flows through, the carbon grabs onto things like chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, and microplastics, removing them from the water. The carbon works well because these contaminants are big enough to stick to the carbon’s surface.

So, Why Can’t It Catch Fluoride?

Now, here’s the trick: fluoride is different. It’s a tiny molecule, and it’s very soluble in water. Imagine trying to catch a grain of sand in a net that’s meant to catch marbles. The grain of sand just slips through. That’s what happens with fluoride—it’s simply too small to be caught by the carbon in our filter.

Our filter reduces fluoride by up to 70%, but it can’t catch every last molecule. For full fluoride removal, you’ll need a more specialized system, like reverse osmosis, which is designed specifically to target these tiny particles.

Proven Performance: We Don’t Just Guess

We don’t just talk the talk. Our Tappwater filter has been tested in independent labs, and the results speak for themselves. The filter reduces fluoride by up to 70%, and it’s incredibly effective at removing PFAS, microplastics, chlorine, and other chemicals that are harmful to your health.

The Bottom Line

Tappwater gives you clean, safe water without the hassle. While it can’t completely remove fluoride, it does remove PFAS, microplastics, heavy metals, and a wide range of other contaminants. For full fluoride removal, you may want to consider pairing our filter with a system like reverse osmosis. But for most people, Tappwater offers a high-performance, easy solution for cleaner, safer water.

Contaminants

Filtering out contaminants from water is critical for safeguarding human health and the environment. Here’s why effectively removing specific contaminants matters:

    • Chlorine bi-products such as TTHMs and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are known carcinogens and have been linked to reproductive issues and liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage.
    • Haloacetic acids (HAAs) are also linked to cancer and can cause problems during pregnancy, including low birth weight and fetal development issues.

Pesticides

Chlordane, Chlordecone, Heptachlor, Lindane

  • Reduction: 95% for all listed pesticides.
  • Why It Matters: These pesticides are not only toxic to humans; causing a range of health issues from acute poisoning to long-term carcinogenic effects; but they also devastate wildlife, particularly aquatic organisms and birds.

Herbicides

2,4-D and Atrazine

  • Percent Reduction: >95%
  • Initial Concentrations: 70 µg/L and 3 µg/L respectively
  • Why It Matters: Herbicides like 2,4-D and Atrazine are widely used in agriculture and can contaminate water through runoff. They are known to disrupt endocrine function in humans and wildlife and are linked to various health issues including reproductive problems.

Installation

Step by step guide - Installing your filter

Welcome to our step-by-step guide on installing your Tap Water Filter. This guide will walk you through the process of setting up your filter for standard taps.

Tap Styles:

Step 1: Unscrew your Aerator

By Hand:

  1. Use your fingers to grip the aerator.
  2. If it’s too tight, you might need to use a cloth or a rubber glove for extra grip.
  3. Rotate the aerator counterclockwise (to the left) to unscrew it. Apply steady, even pressure.

Using a Wrench:

If your aerator does not loosen by hand, try using a wrench.

  1. Adjust the wrench to fit snugly around the aerator.
  2. Grip the aerator firmly with the wrench.
  3. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to unscrew the aerator. Be gentle yet firm to avoid damaging the faucet or aerator. You can use a towel or tape underneath the wrench to protect the surfaces.

Remove the Aerator:

  1. Once the aerator starts to turn, you can usually finish unscrewing it by hand.
  2. If it's still difficult to remove, apply a penetrating oil to the aerator and wait another few minutes before trying again.

Attach the Filter:

  1. Screw on the appropriate adapter included in your parcel to your tap.
  2. Attach the valve of the filter to your adapter.
  3. Attach the housing of the filter to the valve.

Accreditations/Certifications

The Tap Water Filter, EcoPro Filter and Water Filter Jug are tested in accordance with NSF-42 and NSF-53 but does not have certification as we are constantly improving the product and would have to redo the certification every time which takes 4-6 months.

Refills

Welcome! Regularly changing your refill cartridges is essential to ensure clean, safe, and great-tasting water. Below, you'll find guidelines for how often you should replace the cartridges for each of our products.

Tap Water Filter:

The refill cartridge should be changed every 2 months or every 300L, whichever comes first.

EcoPro:

The refill cartridge should be changed every 3 months or every 1200L.

The Shower Filter:

The refill cartridge should be changed every 6 months - The quality of the water and the filtering efficiency can only be guaranteed up to a capacity of use equivalent to this period. If you use the refill beyond these 6 months, the filtering efficiency of contaminants such as pesticides and herbicides, VOCs and heavy metals will no longer meet our quality parameters.

Water Filter Jug:

The refill cartridge should be changed every 3 months or every 400-600L.

Water Filter Bottle:

The refill cartridge should be changed every 2 months so as not to lose the effectiveness of the filtering. Why? The refills are made of activated carbon, a material of organic origin that can be a breeding ground for microorganisms that, over time, can give rise to the proliferation of bacteria. These bacteria accumulate behind the filter and contaminate the water. In addition, the filtered lime will eventually reduce the water flow depending on the source water's hardness.

FAQs

Welcome to our Tap Water Filter FAQ section! We're here to provide you with all the information you need to ensure you get the best performance and experience from your water filter. Whether you're a new user looking for setup instructions, an experienced user seeking maintenance tips, or just curious about how our filters work, you'll find the answers to your questions here.

How does the Tap Water Filter Work?

The Tap Water Filter uses the highest quality coconut shell-based carbon-block filter, used for maximum filtering of chemicals and improvement of taste. You can easily install them directly on the tap without tools and simply switch between filtered and unfiltered water with a lever.

How do I know if my tap is compatible?

Here is a link showcasing our most compatible taps. If you are still unsure, feel free to reach out to our customer service team at [email protected].

How do I install the Tap Water Filter?

(1) Unscrew the aerator from the tap.

(2) Screw on the connector/adapter.

(3) Screw on the filter.

Click here to see the video.

How do I change the filter/refill?

(1) Unscrew the housing from the valve.

(2) Unscrew the replacement filter.

See video below for extra assistance.

When should I change the refill?

The refill cartridge should be changed every 2 months or every 300L, whichever comes first.

How do I dispose the refill?

It should be placed in the general waste bin.⁣ But can it be given a second life?⁣ Of course! Here are 3 ideas:⁣

  1. Put the dry activated carbon block in a sock and leave it wherever you want it to be odour-free: your fridge, bathroom, car, old slippers, drawers, your pet's bed, etc.⁣
  2. Put the activated carbon block in a sock and leave it in areas where mould grows.⁣
  3. Crush the activated carbon block and mix it into compost or soil. Not only will it sit passively in the soil but will aerate it and retain water.⁣

Give it a try and help save the planet! 💚

Can I use warm/hot water through the filter?

We don't recommend warm/hot water passing through the filter as it can lead to bacteria growth. If you wish to use warm/hot water (for washing dishes etc), ensure that the lever is switched to unfiltered mode.

Does the Tap Water Filter remove Fluoride?

What is the Micron Rating for the Tap Water Filter?

The carbon block traps particles larger than 1 to 2 microns.

How does it filter the water so quickly?

The filter cartridge is quite compact so water will be able to go through it fairly quickly although the flow rate isn’t as fast as normal running water. You can read more about how our 5 stage filtration system works through here: https://tappwater.co/pages/technology.

How does it work?

The Water Filter Jug uses 3-stage microfiltration technology with activated carbon and alkaline balls.

The activated carbon block, made from coconut shell, is capable of absorbing chemical, gaseous, metallic and organic elements thanks to its microscopic structure and its highly porous surface.

As the water passes through the filter, substances such as: lime, chlorine (responsible for the bad taste), microplastics, sand, rust and sediment, lead, mercury, salmonella, legionella, pesticides, herbicides, drug residues, nitrates and 80 Contaminants greater than 1-2 μm (microns) are retained in the spherical particles of activated carbon. The result is clean, filtered water, ready for consumption.

How often should I change the refill?

It is recommended to put a new replacement every 3 months so as not to lose the efficiency of the filtering.

How do I change the refill?

Below is a video showing you how to change your refill.

Why is it pouring slowly and how do I fix this?

The Water Filter Jug can sometimes create a vacuum inside. All you need to do is remove the lid; let the air out, and it should pour much better. It also has a slower pour rate when there isn't much water left in the jug. It is important to also follow the guide below before using.

Why is my water not pouring out clear?

The particles from the filter of the pitcher are excess Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) pieces that have escaped the filter. These are not harmful to consume and do not reduce the functionality of your pitcher filter.

These particles are typically all flushed out in the preparation stage (filtering the pitcher x3 before first use), but it is possible for them to appear in your pitcher during use. To reduce further, we recommend removing your filter from the pitcher and re-rinse the filter under running water. Be sure to shake actively and thoroughly until the water from your filter runs clear.

Why should I filter my shower water?

You may not realise it, but the water you shower in can have a significant impact on the health and appearance of your hair and skin. Here are some ways in which unfiltered shower water can harm you:

  • Removing natural oils from hair and skin can damage, dry out, and irritate them.
  • Breaking down amino acids in hair weakens it and can lead to split ends.
  • Skin irritation, such as eczema, itchiness, hives, and rashes, can be caused by showering.
  • Dissolving hair lipids can make hair look less shiny and strong.
  • Reactions with melanin in hair may alter its color.
  • Collagen loss may be accelerated by the formation of free radicals due to heavy metals.

How does the Shower Filter Work?

  • The Shower Filter uses ultra-advanced 4-stage filtration technology, without compromising water pressure.
  • The refill consists of 4 filter stages that absorb chemicals, gases, metals and organic elements thanks to its structure.
  • As the water passes through the filter (calcium sulphate, KDF-55, crystalline quartz and limescale inhibitor), all the contaminants are trapped by the different phases. The result is clean, filtered water ready for use.
  • Filter rate: 3.8 L/min or 15 seconds to filter 1 L
  • Filtration capacity of one refill: 40,000 L
  • Substances removed: +70

How do I install the Shower Filter?

Below is a video showing you how to install the Shower Filter.

When do I change the Refill?

The refill cartridge should be changed every 6 months - The quality of the water and the filtering efficiency can only be guaranteed up to a capacity of use equivalent to this period. If you use the refill beyond these 6 months, the filtering efficiency of contaminants such as pesticides and herbicides, VOCs and heavy metals will no longer meet our quality parameters.

What makes it better than the other shower filters on the market?

Technology

As illustrated in the accompanying diagram, our advanced filtration process meticulously removes impurities, delivering you the highest quality water for a healthier and more enjoyable experience. Here's the science behind our advanced 5-stage nanofiltering technology:

(1) Polypropylene Mesh

Wrapped around the carbon block, it filters out the largest micro-organisms, sediment, rust, scale and other impurities. It also prevents human hands contaminating the carbon block when replacing it.

(2) Activated Carbon Adsorption

The activated carbon made from coconut shells removes organic chemical matter at nanoparticle level incl chlorine, chlorine byproducts (VOCs, THMs, HAAs, etc.), tastes, odours, pesticides, herbicides, PFAs and over 80 other contaminants. It also reduces the quantity of heavy metals like lead, copper and mercury, among others.

(3) Carbon Block Microfiltering

The carbon block traps particles larger than 1–2 microns. This prevents microplastics, particles in suspension and most bacteria passing through the filter. It also prevents the rust particles and bacteria that build up in water pipes entering the filter.

(4) Removes Limescale and Heavy Metals

The carbon block houses our patented formula, the result of long years of research and of which we are extremely proud. It breaks down the mineral to prevent limescale forming, as well as trapping any remaining heavy metals.

(5) Sieve

Filters out hair, sand, dirt and other impurities commonly found in household water pipes.
